Hello everyone,
This course has been extremely informational and a great addition to my bachelor’s degree in
psychology. Aspects of the course that I found particularly helpful for me was the client intake section
on chapter 0 week 1, it was broken down into sections that truly aimed to get to know and understand
the person coming in for assistance. It encourages you to ask questions that address the person as a
whole, seeing how the bigger picture is shown through smaller bits of information, such as past health
conditions, family records, diet, goals, challenges, socioeconomic status and more.
Another section of the course the really solidified in brain was the Substance Effects, Reasons for Abuse
and Risk Reduction chart. In the chart it provides examples of specific question you can ask that
promotes deep thinking from the client. They are not questions that can be answered with a short reply,
they are ones that require effort and thought, allowing for them to really stop and try and answer.
Furthermore, chapter 7 where the DBT section of the course is hands down the most valuable and
beneficial information for me and my future endeavors as a mental health professional. The advanced
insights on the different types of “minds”, how they develop, and it highlights how individuals who
integrate their logical thinking (reasonable mind) with their emotions (emotional mind) to create the
wise mind in which they should operate from.
One thing that I thought was going to be an issue was how daunting it looked at first, but the material
covered is easy to read through and participate in, the instructors are there for you whenever you need
assistance and overall, this course has been a fantastic addition to my education.
